Most burglars go free because detection rates for burglaries have sunk to an all-time low. The percentage of solved burglaries nearly halved in seven years across England and Wales with fewer than one in 30 reaching court.
Police solved just over five per cent of burglaries last year compared with nearly 9.4 per cent in 2015, The Sunday Times reported at the end of January.
In the Metropolitan Police area, the detection rate is just 3.8 per cent for residential burglaries.

Analysis of Metropolitan Police data in 2021 shows detections for burglary at their lowest in years: 1,545 burglaries were solved compared with a high of 5,787 in 2013.
