Most burglars go free because detection rates for burglaries have sunk to an all-time low. The percentage of solved burglaries nearly halved in seven years across England and Wales with fewer than one in 30 reaching court.
Police solved just over five per cent of burglaries last year compared with nearly 9.4 per cent in 2015, The Sunday Times reported at the end of January.
In the Metropolitan Police area, the detection rate is just 3.8 per cent for residential burglaries.
Zero chance of recovery
Analysis of Metropolitan Police data in 2021 shows detections for burglary at their lowest in years: 1,545 burglaries were solved compared with a high of 5,787 in 2013.
If you are burgled chances of recovering your property are probably zero. And while you may be insured it might not be for the full amount of what your items are actually worth. If you’ve had jewellery and other valuables for a long time, you may not have had them revalued recently. So the loss could be even greater. And there are no replacing items of sentimental value.
Don’t give burglars a chance
A burglary is a truly shocking event, and many people feel violated after their home has been invaded by criminals. As well as taking precautions against being burgled such as security lighting and burglar alarms you should also ensure your most precious possessions are safe. Don’t give burglars a chance to steal them.
